Hoodia Side Effects: Should You Be Concerned About Your Liver?

In a previous article I wrote about hoodia gordonii side effects and that there were no known side effects to date. After doing more research, however, there are a couple potential hoodia side effects from hoodia diet pills that I didn’t mention in that article. One seems plausible while the other one isn’t likely to be an issue unless you have a liver abnormality.

The first of the two hoodia side effects that I didn’t mention in my original article is the potential for a minor upset stomach. None of the studies I’ve read have documented this side effect.

After reading posts from dieters in various weight loss forums,
it seems that a few people did in fact experience a minor
upset stomach while taking hoodia diet pills.

What these people didn’t say, however, is what brand they were taking, how much they were taking, or what the rest of their diet consisted of. These are all factors that could play a role in experiencing stomach upset.

For example, many of the cheap hoodia brands contain a variety of ingredients other than hoodia gordonii that could lead to an upset stomach. If they’re taking an overdose of them or eating crappy foods when they do eat, it’s plausible they could easily experience an upset stomach.

So while it’s possible a minor upset stomach could be a potential hoodia side effect, I doubt it is common - especially if you are taking a high quality hoodia diet pill such as Desert Burn. A product like Desert Burn contains 100% authentic hoodia gordonii - and nothing else. These are the kinds of products you want to look for when you buy hoodia to prevent any potential hoodia gordonii side effects.

The other possible hoodia side effect has to deal with the liver. Phytopharm, a British pharmaceutical company, was given an exclusive patent to the active ingredient in hoodia gordonii that is responsible for its appetite suppressing abilities. That active ingredient is known as P57.

Phytopharm originally partnered with Pfizer to find a method to extract P57 from the plant to be used in drugs and various other weight loss products. They are no longer partners and now Phytopharm is working with Unilever, the makers of SlimFast products.

At any rate, during their partnership Pfizer conducted a study on P57. Dr. David MacLean, an endocrinologist at Brown Medical School, headed the study. He injected the brains of rats with P57. What he discovered was that P57 was easily broken down by the liver.

Dr. Michael Steelman, a weight loss specialist, said he was concerned
that P57 was processed by the liver since many obese people often have liver abnormalities that could compound any side effects.

For this reason, Dr. Steelman advises that anyone who uses hoodia gordonii diet pills should use them under a doctor’s supervision.

There are two important points about the liver and any potential negative hoodia side effects. Note that Dr. MacLean said that P57 was “easily” broken down in the liver which would seem to indicate that it doesn’t cause a significant amount of stress on the liver for individuals with normal liver function.

However, given Dr. Steelman’s point that many obese people suffer from liver problems, then it makes perfectly good sense that if you are significantly overweight and have liver problems to seek medical advice before taking hoodia diet pills.

Furthermore, it makes sense to seek medical advice before
taking hoodia diet pills if you suspect or know you have
any liver problems regardless of your weight.

Since hoodia diet pills are relatively new (they were introduced on a mass scale back in 2004) and since nobody knows what the long term hoodia side effects are, it makes sense to only use them on an occasional basis. They are not the sole solution to weight loss anyway. They are just one minor tool in your weight loss tool chest. If you’re considering them, don’t make the mistake of thinking you can rely on them for long term weight loss.
