What’s The Best Diet For Me? Finding a Diet That Works
If you have ever been on a diet of any kind, you know how dieting works. No matter what the diet is, there are two common factors that ultimately help you achieve your weight loss goals. Those two things are controlling what you eat and how much you eat. Because of this, many people find that they struggle to stick to the plan. Unless your diet is specifically tailored to you by a professional, you are probably following a very general plan that does not really suit you. Rather than follow a generic plan, you are better off learning for yourself how much food is right for you and creating the best diet for you that works.
How Much is Too Little?
This is a fairly easy question to answer. If you are not satisfied, you are eating too little. However, there are other factors which may cause you to think you are not satisfied when you really are. More on that later.
Your body requires certain things in order to function. While the word fat is almost a swear word in the American vocabulary, your body still requires it in order to maintain a healthy function. Fat is energy and without it, you may find yourself feeling sluggish. You also need to recognize that there are different kinds of fats. Getting the right amount of good fats will give you energy without packing on too much weight. Don’t avoid fats just because the word has such a negative connotation.
Many people eat too little at breakfast. In fact, many people skip breakfast entirely. While we have a wide array of snack foods which claim to be a healthy substitute for breakfast, the fact is that if you do not eat a big enough breakfast, you will likely end up eating too much later on in the day to make up for it. By eating a big nutritious breakfast, not only will you have more energy to face the day, but you won’t be tempted with snacks between meals and you won’t feel the need to gorge yourself at dinner.
How Much is Too Much?
Knowing whether you ate too much is pretty simple. You should never actually feel as though you cannot eat more. When you reach the point where you say, “If I eat another bite I’ll explode” you are far too full. Learning the difference between satisfied and stuffed is very important to setting up a healthy lifestyle.
When you eat too much, there is also a chance that you have eaten too fast. Eating too fast causes the stomach to delay before it realizes it is full. This can mean that you are still eating even when your stomach is ready for you to stop. To avoid eating too much, be sure to eat slowly and chew your food completely. Many people swallow their food well before it is chewed properly. This can cause poor digestive health and lead to weight gain as well as painful digestive problems. If you eat slowly, you will know when you are satisfied. And always remember that just because you can eat more, doesn’t mean you should.
Why Am I Not Eating the Right Amount?
The reasons for why you are not eating properly are numerous. Many people are not eating the amount that is right for them purely because they do not understand the basics of how their eating habits affect their life. But there are other reasons which can be harder to combat. These reasons require more than just learning about your body’s digestive function.
Many people are emotional eaters. For some, that can mean eating when you are sad or eating more when you are happy. Learning to recognize why you eat will help you overcome your overeating. Along these lines, many people eat because they are misinterpreting subconscious signals. When you are bored or stagnant, your body may be trying to get you to do something. If you sit around watching television for hours, your body may want you to get up. You may interpret that as taking a trip to the fridge to busy yourself. When you learn to recognize this signal, you may find that going outside for a walk gets rid of your craving.
The truth is that only you are capable of determining how much you should eat. Others may be able to suggest a healthy amount or point out when you have eaten a lot of food, but they cannot read your mind and tell you that your brain is saying, “Enough already!”
When you take a closer look at the amount of food you eat, you may be surprised. If it helps you, write down what you consumed during one day and , the next day, lay it out on the table in front of you. If you have the means to do that for what you eat in an entire week, all the better. Sometimes it takes a visual representation to understand the gravity of the situation. Whether you are eating too much or too little, learning what amount is right for you will help you find the best diet for you that actually works.
