Can I Take Hoodia If I Am Hypothyroid?
Hi, Travis, I just wanted to know if I can use hoodia if I am hypothyroid? -Amber
Amber:
Great question as there are millions of Americans suffering from hypothyroidism. For those unfamiliar with the condition, it is when the body lacks sufficient thyroid hormone. The main purpose of thyroid hormone is to run the body’s metabolism. People who suffer from hypothyroidism will have symptoms associated with a slow metabolism such as weight gain or the inability to lose weight even with diet and exercise.
Other symptoms include fatigue, weakness, hair loss, muscle cramps and frequent muscle aches, irritability, moodiness, menstrual problems, and decreased libido. If you have these symptoms, you need to discuss them with your doctor and probably seek the skills of an endocrinologist.
Now, to answer your question I turned to my good friend, Dr. Varallo, who is a practicing OB/GYN in the state of New Jersey. His website can be found at www.JosephVaralloMD.com Dr. varallo has over two years of clinical experience with hoodia - specifically Desert Burn hoodia. Here is what he had to say about taking hoodia when you have hypothyroidism.
“I have many patients that are hypothyroid and it has no effect on TSH levels or the dosage of synthroid or any other thyroid replacement drug. Hypothyroid patients are usually a bit overweight and the Desert Burn will help them with weight management. Patients with primary or secondary hypothyroidism should be carefully followed by an endocrinologist and follow their advice. Most of the patients I see have subclinical hypothyroidism and do well on Desert Burn.”
I hope this information helps. Dr. Varallo offers free consultations via email or phone for those with pre-existing medical conditions so I would encourage you to contact him directly via his website if you have further questions.
