The Price of Hoodia May Be Coming Down Soon
Ever since hoodia diet pills were introduced on a mass scale in 2004, the demand has far exceeded the supply. As a result, the price of raw hoodia gordonii has sky rocketed to over $300/kilo. With prices like this, it’s no wonder why authentic hoodia diet pills are expensive.

A bottle of authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills, like those made by Desert Burn, cost anywhere between $50 - $60. These prices weren’t expected to come down anytime soon and were expected to go no where but up. That might change now thanks to a company called, Afriplex, who will be bringing more hoodia gordonii to the market this year and in the following years to come.
Afriplex is a South African company that has planted 12 million hoodia gordonii plants and its first harvest in April 2007 is expected to yield 80 dry tonnes of hoodia gordonii. The company expects to reach full capacity in 2009 where production is expected to reach 200 tons per year. This project is the largest independent commercial hoodia project worldwide.
To put these numbers in perspective, there were 60 tons of wild harvested hoodia gordonii exported from South Africa in 2006. A harvest yielding 80 dry tonnes this year alone will significantly increase the amount of material available and should help combat rising prices on raw hoodia gordonii.
This is great news for hoodia sellers such as Desert Burn, Hoodoba, and other companies that use only authentic hoodia gordonii in their products - and should be great news for consumers as well. Only time will tell if the price of raw hoodia does indeed come down and if the decrease in price translates into a drop in the retail prices of hoodia supplements.
I would like to believe that companies will pass the savings on to customers, but don’t hold your breath! Hopefully at the very least these companies will hold the line on their prices and not increase them for a while. We’ll have to see what unfolds this year but I don’t think there will be any movement in the price of authentic hoodia gordonii diet pills this year - upwards or downwards.
