Hoodia gordonii is a succulent plant looks like an ordinary cactus with thin, thorny fingers and grows about 20 inches tall in the reddish sand of southern Africa’s Kalahari Desert, home of the San People. The San have been using the Hoodia gordonii succulent for centuries to stave off hunger during their long and arduous hunting trips in the harsh South African wild. Proven to successfully combat hunger, they have been using it for centuries during long trips in the desert. The Hoodia Gordonii plant can withstand and thrives in extreme heat and can be easily propagated since it is protected by the branches of nurse plant from sun’s strong rays. It is light brown in color and has a bitter taste. Once the stems are cut from the plant, they are bagged and transported to a processing plant. Inside the plant, the Hoodia Gordonii is washed and dried. The stems are then sliced into chips, or shredded, enabling it to dry until totally moisture free. The dried Hoodia is milled into a fine powder and irradiated to kill any harmful bacteria that may be present.
But how can this plant function effectively in the body? Scientists experimented and successfully identified that only Hoodia gordonii has active ingredient identified as steroidal glycoside or “p57”. This “p57” works in the brain particularly in the hypothalamus – a part of the brain that regulates the internal activities of the body. It also monitors blood glucose levels and the body’s water content to regulate appetite for food or drink. It plays an important role in regulating the feeding behavior. Meaning, steroidal glycoside or “p57” makes the brain think that you have already eaten, making you feel full though you were not eaten yet. It simply tricks the brain by making the stomach feel full. By having a reduced desire for food, a delay in the time after eating before hunger sets in again, a feeling full more quickly, and a general feeling of well-being you will tend to eat less.
